Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

helloexpense
A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation - a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

With a Smartphone Dock For a Heart, This Teddy Bear Will Terrorize Your Kids

If Teddy Ruxpin had tried harder to keep up with technology he wouldn't have risen from the grave using proprietary digital cartridges. Instead, he'd have a smartphone dock embedded in his torso like this Japaese Cocolo Bear does. More »

Zoho Docs 2.0 adds iPad support

zoho docs ipad
Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now -- at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that's no longer the case.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it's now a universal app. Now you're able to take advantage of the app's mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options -- which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.

Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.

Shot Shot Pirate is a fun, simple physics game

shotshotpirate
Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you're cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It's not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks - it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it's gone, you lose. But don't worry! If you don't make it on the first try, it's very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it's a cute game. I've seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise - a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Jelly Bean update hits Galaxy Note 10.1, starting in Germany

Android Central

Samsung has begun updating its Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, according to reports. Samsung fansite SamMobile is reporting that German Note 10.1 devices are first in line for the update, which is being pushed out to the pen-toting tablet as a 300MB over-the-air download. After upgrading, updated devices should be running software version N8000XXBLJ9.

The update comes almost three months after the Galaxy Note 10.1 launched in the U.S. and Europe with ICS -- one of the last Samsung flagship devices to ship with Android 4.0. With this latest software update, Note 10.1 owners can look forward to improved responsiveness thanks to Google's "Project Butter" enhancements, as well as other software goodies like the new Google Search app with Google Now.

We've yet to hear any reports of Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets outside of Germany getting this update, but in the event that you're seeing an OTA waiting on your Note 10.1 this morning, be sure to let us know in the comments section. If you're feeling brave, you'll find an ODIN-flashable version of the German ROM over at the source link. (If you don't know what that is, it's probably best to wait it out)

Angry Birds Star Wars adds sci-fi flavor to bird flinging, available today, we go hands-on

Angry Birds Star Wars adds scifi flavor to bird flinging, available today, we go handson

Finland's biggest game studio is heading back into the coop, pulling out its Angry Birds franchise for yet another go on a whole mess of platforms -- this time, even Windows 8 and its mobile counterpart get some attention. Moreover, Rovio's teamed with the folks at LucasArts (now part of the Disney family) to craft an entirely thematic experience: enter Angry Birds Star Wars. But fret not -- just because Angry Birds Star Wars seems like a shameless tie-in doesn't mean it's a bad game (it is, however, a shameless tie-in, no matter which way you cut it). In fact, it's quite good, melding pieces of Angry Birds Space -- arguably the best and most creative entry in the Angry Birds franchise -- with new gameplay elements. Rather than birds which explode or other such modifiers, post-fling, Angry Birds Star Wars equips each of several themed birds with one weapon apiece. An Obi-Wan Kenobi-themed bird uses The Force to push enemies or blocks, while a Han Solo-themed bird fires three blasts from a space pistol, just to name a few.

That Angry Birds Space component is little more than gravity effects, but it helps to mix up the often redundant level design -- if you've played more than one Angry Birds game, you've seen most of what's on offer here. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, per se, but be forewarned if you're expecting the kind of innovation we saw from Rovio's last Angry Birds spinoff, Bad Piggies. Angry Birds Star Wars launches today on iOS ($0.99 / iPhone, $2.99 / iPad), Android (Free SD version, HD is $2.99), Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac ($4.99), PC, Windows Phone ($0.99), and Windows 8. Go after the break to check out the cinematic and gameplay trailers, along with the PR.

How to use Remind me Later to handle inopportune calls on your iPhone

How to remind yourself to return a missed call on your iPhone

iOS 6 brings some welcome new features to the Phone app, including Remind me Later, which lets you safely avoid answering calls when it's inconvenient without having to worry you'll forget to return them later. As the name implies, Remind me Later ties the Phone app straight into the Reminders app, so it's really quick to use. Like the new, quick text-message replies, Remind me Later is accessible right from the Lock screen, and is only a swipe away.

How to set a location based alert with Remind me Later

  1. When a call comes in, tap and hold the phone icon to the right of Slide to Answer control, and slide it upwards to reveal the new options panel.
  • Tap the Remind Me Later option.
  • Tap one of the location-based options, When I Leave, When I get Home, or When I get to Work.
  • If you haven't used location-based alerts before, you might get a popup requesting access to your location. Give your permission, or the alert can't work.
  • How to set a time-based alert using Remind me Later

    1. When a call comes in, tap and hold the phone icon to the right of Slide to Answer control, and slide it upwards to reveal the new options panel.
  • Tap the Remind Me Later option.
  • Tap In 1 Hour.
  • iOS will now set an alarm and when one hour has passed, your alert will go off, reminding you to return the missed call.

    Do not Disturb mode

iOS 6 also comes with a new Do not Disturb mode. If you're in a situation where you don't want to be bothered by calls for an extended period of time, don't want to have to dismiss them all manual, and don't care about being reminded to return them beyond the usual missed call notifications, Do not Disturb can be the better choice.
