In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Squier by Fender Strat Guitar with USB and iOS Connectivity

Guitarists who want to record directly into their computer or iPad have had to rely on some sort of interface, and The Gadgeteer has reviewed some of them.  Some work better than others, and some require proprietary software for best results.  Fender has released a guitar that doesn’t require a third party interface.  Their Squier by Fender Strat Guitar with USB and iOS Connectivity connects directly to and records to your Apple iOS device, or Mac or Windows-based PC.  The guitar has a miniUSB connector built in, and it comes with miniUSB-to-USB and miniUSB-to-30-pin connector cables.  (If you have the newest version of the iOS devices, you’ll need a Lightning-to-30-pin adapter.)  It also has a headphone amp with volume control to monitor your sound in USB mode.  It’s still a fully-functional Strat with a pickup select switch, pickup volume control, and pickup tone control.  It also has a 1/4″ passive guitar output and can be plugged in to your amp, too.  It’s available only in the color shown, but no details are available about the wood or pickups used.  It’s exclusively found at Apple for $199.95.

If you haven't already, dump archaic email for projects. It doesn't work. The idea of having a stream of emails gathered chronologically -- and stuffed with uncollaborative attachments rather than fluid conversations organized by project -- is asking for confusion and delays. Team collaboration app Teambox supports five users for free. For more, there's a fee of $5 each per year. Projects related to clients, sales and so on can be created and in-filled to post conversations, tasks and files.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

A sneak peek at the next version of Android Market and Music app

Android Honeycomb'ish smartphone Music appUpdate: Tech From 10 seems to be offline -- but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a 'Content rating,' but that's it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps -- most notably, there's a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).

Also available from the test Android Market is 'Google Gallery 3D New 10.2', 'Google - Camera v12' and 'Google Desk Clock 10' -- but, curiously, all of the apps refused to launch on Tech From 10's Galaxy S (Vibrant) smartphone. Are they Honeycomb apps? Or, more likely, are they destined for the next Android smartphone OS, Ice Cream?

If you want to try out the new Honeycombish Music app, Tech From 10 has made the APK available for download. You can also download the three Google apps, if you want to have a poke around.

Letterpress for iPhone and iPad updates with Rematch and more

The highly addicting word game Letterpress by atebits has received an excellent update, today, that address a few of our gripes, the main one being the inability to start a rematch after a game ends. With Letterpress 1.1, now you can!

One of the other biggest additions to Letterpress 1.1 is that now you can send Game Center friend requests directly from the app. There is also an option to turn off the sounds, more words in the dictionary, and better handling of those annoying server errors.

I don't normally include all the release notes when announcing an update to an app, but atebits has made these ones so fun, that I can't help myself. I love it when developers act human and make their notes and descriptions fun.

  • Rematch! (requires iOS 6 or newer)
  • Option to silence sounds. FYI I worked really hard on those sounds. No, no, go ahead, turn off the sounds if you want.
  • Added words to the dictionary (and removed a few goofs).
  • Fixed "Tell a Friend" via Facebook. People use Facebook?
  • Clearer instructions. Yes, days of the week are proper nouns. No, they are not allowed.
  • Handle servers errors a bit better. CROSS YOUR FINGERS THAT'S SOME GNARLY CODE.
  • Less bugs! Not that I'm saying there were any bugs before. But there are definitely fewer now.
  • Fixed syncing deleted games across devices.
  • Tiles are now tappier when you tap tiles fast. Tap tappity tap tap.
  • I like cookies.
  • Send Game Center friend requests right from the app! Holy moly! So cool! Friend your friends with the friendlier friender!
  • In-app purchases are less forgetful.
  • Does anybody read these? Helloooooo?

Now wasn't that fun?

So what do you think of the new update? Are you excited for Rematch and in-app Game Center requests? If you don't yet play Letterpress, what are you waiting for? Share your Game Center ID in the comments below and start challenging each other!
