Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Man who broke into Steve Jobs' home gets seven year prison sentence

Man who broke into Steve Jobs' home gets seven year prison sentence

Kariem McFarlin, the man who burglarized the home of the late Steve Jobs back in July has been sentenced to 7 years in a California state prison for stealing over $60,000 in items from the Jobs' home as well as technology and jewelry from homes in other surrounding areas.

35 year old McFarlin was arrested back in August after Apple and REACT (Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team) were able to track iTunes purchases to serial numbers of devices that were owned the Jobs family. He admitted to the crimes as well as additional robberies.

McFarlin admitted to the burglary under questioning by Palo Alto police and said he had stolen from other homes in the San Francisco Bay Area, including two homes in Marin County, four homes in San Francisco County and one home in Alameda County.

He admitted keeping hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of property from those burglaries at his home and at a storage locker. The property included computers, jewelry, furniture and a solid silver bar, according to the Santa Clara District Attorney's office.

At the time of his arrest, McFarlin stated that he had done it due to money issues. Aside from his prison sentence of 7 years, he's also been ordered to pay restitution to the families that were stolen from.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Bing Tags broaden reach with public results, extend beyond Facebook friends

Bing Tags

As bedfellows go, Microsoft and Facebook have had something of an open relationship; a knot of social / search entanglement that recently yielded Graph Search, among other crossovers. But, as of today, the two companies are looking to take things even further by building upon the work started with Bing Tags last summer. The integration, which previously allowed users to tag themselves or Facebook friends on sites and search queries for more personal feedback, will now extend beyond a user's inner circle and be made available to a "broader audience." Of course, privacy here is key (as we also learned from Facebook's last press event) and Microsoft's making it abundantly clear that this is opt-in. So, unless you give explicit approval for your tags to appear out-of-network, they won't -- only your friends will have access to those results. If you haven't already signed-up for the beta service, you can test it out at the source below.

Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now -- at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that's no longer the case.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it's now a universal app. Now you're able to take advantage of the app's mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.
