Thousands of iPad Apps Is that All it Has to Offer?

The mad rush to get hold of an iPad certainly led a lot of people to believe that this nifty little gadget would put a smart phone to shame. The fact that users would be able to get thousands of apps on their iPad might have had something to do with craze and Apple did make it one of the selling points about the device.

Apple marketed the iPad as having specifically designed apps and that these ranged from leisure and educational ones right through to business applications that the average person would not be able to live without. Currently there are more apps being developed for the iPad which could mean there will be one for just about everything imaginable.

The iPad is loaded with apps, thousands of them and although some of these may appear to be useless at first, they are however available on the device should you ever need to use them. Some of the apps are really high tech but then the option is there for those who might know how to use them.

With this said there are lots of very useful ones too and this includes Epicurious which is a comprehensive cookbook that’s indexed for easy use. Simply by using one ingredient as a keyword search brings up recipes with that ingredient in them and then you can narrow the search by adding another keyword. With other lifestyle apps like Grocery iQ, these are fun to use and very useful to have at your fingertips.

When it comes to gaming and entertainment, there is a wide choice of things to choose from which includes high speed racing to more scholarly apps. Gaming is a great experience on the iPad because of it’s great display and ultra fast processor as well as it’s multi-orientation screen. This allows users to flip the tablet to whichever position the like best whether it’s portrait or landscape.

On an educational note there is Scrabble and Soduko which are extremely popular game puzzles that have been integrated into the iPad apps. But there are plenty more of them including Labyrinth, Monkey Flight, Traffic Rush to name but a few.

If you are a racing fan then the iPad apps available will get your head spinning. There’s Real Racing 2 HD, Asphalt 5 HD, F1 2011 GAME, Fastlane Street Racing Lite and many, many more. The total amount at the present time is around one hundred racing games which should keep anyone busy for a while.

There is even more choice when it comes to adding apps to an iPad. All you have to do is visit Apple’s App Store where there are thousands to choose from which means you are bound to find one or two that catch your eye.

Apple grows war chest, takes ownership of 1,024 Nortel patents

Apple grows war chest, takes ownership of 1,024 Nortel patents

Apple has reportedly received a transfer of 1,024 patents or patent applications from Rockstar Consortium, formerly Rockstar Bidco, a group of technology companies that bid on thousands of patents that had previously held by Nortel. Apple had been part of Rockstar Bidco, which bid against Google for the patents, and had access to the patents through that consortium. The transfer of patents to Apple’s ownership, however, could better position them in ongoing litigation. Owen Thomas of Business Insider reports:

Apple already had access to these patents, since it owns a large stake in Rockstar Consortium. That venture, formerly known as Rockstar Bidco, bid $4.5 billion, of which Apple provided $2.6 billion, on a collection of 4,000 patents sold by Nortel. Microsoft, Sony, Ericsson, and RIM also backed Rockstar, which beat out Google in the bidding for the patent collection.

Even as Apple has settled with HTC and may be prepared to settle at least part of their case against Motorola Mobility, and won $1 billion verdict against Samsung in the U.S., a number of other, international cases, haven't gone Apple's way.

So, while the contents of these patents is unknown, except that they deal primarily with mobile technology, they could help solidify Apple's current and future litigation.

With Samsung is reportedly unwilling to settle at this point, having already reaped the rewards of what Apple considers their "copyist" behavior, perhaps Nortel's patents could help change their minds?

It’s possible that, with the acquisition of these patents, Apple will have enough leverage to get Samsung to settle at least some of the outstanding lawsuits between the companies, and the mobile world can enjoy even a little bit of rest after a long, drawn-out patent conflict.

Levenger Bomber Jacket Electronics Phone/Note Case review

I upgraded my iPhone when the iPhone 5 was released.  Of course, new phones mean new cases and covers, and usually there’s a delay between the iPhone release and the availability of cases for it.  Levenger searched their inventory of phone pouches and found that they had several in their inventory that would accommodate the iPhone 5, including the Bomber Jacket Electronics Phone / Note Case.  I’ve been a fan of Levenger’s products in general, and their Bomber leather in particular, for many years now.  I was very pleased to be selected to review the Bomber Jacket phone pouch they sent to The Gadgeteer.  Let’s give it a look.

Levenger says the Bomber Leather line of bags, notebooks, desk accessories, and other accessories appeal to men.  I know they do, because my husband loves his Bomber Leather accessories.  However, I don’t find the line to be too masculine for women, and I love the look and smell of the rich leather.  I have several Bomber pieces – two Circa notebooks, an index card organizer, and a pouch that holds all my cords and cables.

The leather is a deep, dark brown.  I noticed the phone pouch doesn’t have a surface texture that’s as grainy as some of the other Bomber pieces I own.  The leather is very supple, and it’s thick enough that I’m sure I’ll get years of use from any Bomber piece I own, and this Phone / Note Case is no exception.  The stitching is even and straight, and some of it is done in a contrast thread.  There’s a wrist strap with a brass-toned lobster claw hook that attaches to a brass-toned D-ring sewn to the pouch.  The strap is easily removed if you don’t want to use it.  The pouch measures 3.5″ W x 1″ D x 6″ H and weighs 3.7 ounces on my digital kitchen scale.

The pouch arrived in a sturdy green box with elastic closure.  There’s a felt wrap inside to protect the pouch from scratches and dust.  The packaging makes for a nice gift presentation or a sturdy storage solution for when you aren’t using the pouch.

The back has an open pocket that can hold note cards.  Again, note the contrast stitching.

The front has another open note card pocket and an ID pocket with a clear plastic cover to protect the card inside.  The ID pocket is also open, and I’m paranoid about my driver’s license somehow jumping out of open pockets like this.  The plastic lining is “grippy” enough that the card should be held securely, though.

Levenger includes a sample pack of their 3X5 note cards.  The cards are much thicker than cheap index cards you find at most office supply stores, and they are available as to-do, gridded, or ruled cards.  You should check Levenger for other note card styles and for custom-printed cards with your name or initials on them.  These cards fit in the external note card pockets.

Here, you can see the two external pockets.  Both they and the main compartment are lined with the cotton twill fabric Levenger always uses with their Bomber leather.  The fabric has held up well in the accessories I’ve owned for years.

The main compartment closes with a plastic zipper, so you don’t have to worry about scratching your phone as you take it in and out of the pouch.  The zipper has a brass-toned metal zipper head with a leather tab pull.  It operates smoothly and easily.

The interior compartment is empty, save for a leather badge embossed with the Levenger logo sewn inside.  You can see there is room to spare with my iPhone 5 inside.  The height of the compartment is more than sufficient for the height of the longer iPhone 5, too.  If you don’t have an iPhone 5, there should be plenty of room for most smartphones inside.

I mentioned that I don’t like stowing my driver’s license in unsecured outside pockets, but I wanted to use the Phone / Note case as my “go to lunch and do errands” bag.  I wanted to keep my driver’s license, a couple of credit cards, insurance cards, and even a little currency inside.  Since I had plenty of room, I just bought one of the little minimal card wallets I see everywhere with room for six cards (three on the other side) and stuck it in my Phone / Note Case.  I have everything I need in the pouch, but when I need to take a bigger bag with other things, the Phone / Note Case fits easily inside my purse or laptop bag.

You can see there’s room inside for the iPhone 5, the little card wallet, and my Fisher Space Pen.

The Bomber Jacket Electronics Phone / Note Case works very well for my needs.  It fits my iPhone 5, the card wallet, and pen with even a little room to spare.  I have room in the outside pockets for plenty of note cards, or I could even stick my charging cable in one external pocket.  I love the look and the smell of the rich leather, and the quality construction means I’ll have years of use with it.  The generous size of the interior pocket means that I’ll have room for bigger phones as they evolve – so long as they don’t decide to replace the iPhone with a tablet-sized device.  There’s no planned obsolescence with Levenger goods.  Everyone – male or female, casual or business user – should find the Bomber Jacket Electronics Phone / Note Case to be just right for their phone.

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

Rogers kicked off Canadian NFC mobile payments at the start of the month through what was mostly a ceremonial gesture -- until the CIBC app arrived, locals simply had to wait. It's at last time try some Suretap mobile shopping now that the CIBC Mobile Payment App has popped up in BlackBerry App World. As promised, the title will let Canucks tap to pay with a credit card (up to $50 at once) at the 17 store chains offering use of a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave terminal. The catch remains the sheer number of conditions that need to be in place: on top of requiring an NFC-aware SIM card, a CIBC credit card and the right stores, the early software only works its magic with the BlackBerry Bold 9900; Curve 9380 support depends on a future update. Having the crucial app is still a step forward, and the handful of trailblazers can always recount tales of buying Timbits with their Bolds while those on other platforms have to sit tight until 2013.

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

eBay Launches Luxury Site for China's Fashionistas

eBay is taking another stab at the Chinese market. The retailer's new Chinese site, which is a joint venture with luxury retailed xiu.com, is described as low-key but stylish, and focuses on mid-range to high-end products such as clothing, handbags and accessories. Banana Republic, Clinique and Guess are among the estimated 5,000 brands already on board with the site. News broke a few weeks ago that eBay would partner with xiu.com, which itself specializes in high-end clothing.
