Stan Lee's 'Verticus' Starts With Awesomeness, Then Falls Flat

When I saw that comic book legend Stan Lee was involved in a new iOS game released last week, Verticus, I was stoked enough to drop $1.99 and give it a try. After all, we're talking about Stan Lee here, and if you don't appreciate his contribution to the entertainment world -- co-creator of Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man, and more -- a new iOS game won't mean much to you. The premise is simple: You're a superheroish guy in a suit of armor freefalling from the sky, through a futuristic city, and into the Earth's core.

Google wants to make an open source AirPlay alternative

Google wants to make a more open source AirPlay alternative

YouTube recently launched a service very similar to Apple's AirPlay that allows Android users to beam movies to their Google TV. Apparently Google wants to take it a step further yet, and with an open standard. In an interview with GigaOM, Google executives have made it clear that streaming for Google TV is only the beginning:

Google took a page from Apple’s playbook when it rolled out its own AirPlay-like remote control feature for YouTube on Google TV last week. The company has since launched a dedicated micro-site to promote the feature, showing how serious it is taking second screen control. But it is not stopping there. Drayson told me that Google is “actively working with other companies” to turn this into an open standard, which could be used on other platforms and for other apps as well.

This means that Google could potentially pair up with other vendors in order to create "out of the box" compatibility across various platforms. Samsung has made smart TV's for years that could take advantage of the software and allow users to beam to their tv without any additional add-ons.

Apple sold 5.3 million units of the device (Apple TV) in its fiscal year 2012, which makes it by far the best-selling video streaming box. One could also argue that AirPlay-like functionality is one of the key features that’s been missing from Android to successfully compete with the iPad.

If you use AirPlay to wirelessly beam video to an Apple TV from your iOS device or Mac, you know how convenient it can be, especially in a room full of people all wanting to see the same thing. However, if you want to use AirPlay, you need to own an AirPlay enabled device such as an Apple TV in order to share it and is obviously only compatible with iOS.

An open standard would allow many other streaming box services to take advantage and it looks as if that's exactly what Google intends on doing. It would mean that anyone with an Android device would have a lot more options when it comes to streaming.

Judge grants Samsung's request for a look at HTC and Apple settlement agreement

HTC and Apple

A few days back Samsung asked the courts for the terms of the settlement agreement between HTC and Apple, and this evening US Judge Paul S. Grewal granted the request. Samsung is curious because they believe that some of the licenses cover those special user experience patents that Apple is quick to claim are infringed. Samsung claims that their determination of whether or not those patents were licensed will help decide if they need to stop production of devices named in prior lawsuits.

Simply put, Samsung believes that if this agreement shows that Apple is fine with another company using these patents after a payment, then that billion dollar judgment awarded to Apple ought to cover it and no further proceedings are needed.

This one isn't going away any time soon, folks.

The Downsides to Apple’s iPad

When Apple’s iPad was launched, there were queues of people waiting to get their hands on one. The revolutionary tablet iPad was going to offer people a new device that was going to change their lives. However, a lot of people shrugged at the idea with clear indifference. Many people announced their disappointment at the fact the iPad could not deliver on it’s promises. The two opposing views show just how divided opinions are about the device.

First we need to take a look at the things that make the iPad a device that really is not worth buying.

 Apple are constantly releasing new versions of the iPad in the very near future, so is it the device we all need to rush out and buy?

 A lot of people have expressed their pure disappointment in the iPad so when it comes to a new tablet PC, the big question on everyone’s lips is ‘will the device be any better’? The fact that questions are being asked is enough to hurt Apple’s sales because it is mostly ‘techies’ who don’t like the iPad. Bad press always puts a large number of people off buying a product.

 With a new upgraded version soon to be released, a lot of people would rather wait for the it to be launced because the device might have a few of the features that Apple did not incorporate into the iPad in the first place and this includes a built-in camera. If it means waiting a few months for a better version of the device, then people would prefer to do this than fork out $500 on a device that lacks some fundamental features that will be outdated very soon by an upgraded version.

On factor that many people find annoying about the iPad is the fact is does not support Flash which is a standard on the web. Flash runs videos, audios as well as games but for one reason or another Apple does not like this application which some people find understandable. Apple prefers a less vulnerable application that’s more stable and harder to hack into. As such the company uses it’s own HTML5.

However, as the majority of websites use Adobe Flash, this can be a little annoying. Users have to visit sites using the iPad’s Safari browser and although this is great, this causes a few problems that can be very annoying.

As mentioned above, there’s no in-built camera either and there’s no guarantee that a newer version will have one either. This is a huge downside of the iPad as people can’t communicate over skype or any other way they might want to.

Multitasking can only be done when running Apple’s native applications, it does run on third party applications. So if users want to multitask the simple answer is they won’t be able to if they are running any application that are not native to Apple.

The conclusion is the iPad is great if you want a sophisticated gadget that has multi-function applications like a multimedia player, a laptop hybrid or that represents a really great toy. However, if you like to be online then you might find you reach a dead end pretty quickly without Flash support and you won’t be able to make a video call on Skype while listening to iTunes.

Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison
Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you're into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you're a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you're abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you're being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don't give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It's a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

EE, Vodafone customers to get Tube Wifi access

Android Central

Update: Both EE and Vodafone have now confirmed that they'll offer Wifi on the Tube in 2013.

Original story: British mobile operators EE and Vodafone are said to be in talks to allow their customers free access to Virgin Media's Wifi network on the London Underground, according to reports. A tweet from the official EE Twitter account, which has since been deleted, said, "Travel on the tube? From early 2013, EE customers will be able to get WiFi access on the London Underground at no extra cost. Details soon."

Virgin Media's Underground Wifi network is currently open to all users for free, however the company is due to begin charging for access in the near future. Presumably that's when deals with mobile operators might also kick in. Virgin and EE already collaborate on on mobile services in the UK, including the Virgin Media mobile network, which runs on EE, and on-board Wifi access on Virgin Trains.

UK tech blog Pocket-Lint reports that the two are in talks to over access to Virgin Media's Tube Wifi network, which currently covers some 72 Underground stations. What's more, Vodafone is said to be in similar negotiations with Virgin to bring access to its customers, too.

Neither company is officially commenting on the deals, but the "early 2013" timeframe suggested in EE's deleted tweet indicates an agreement well may be close.

Samsung adds new iPad, iPad mini and iPod to lawsuit, will peek at Apple / HTC settlement

Samsung motions to add new iPad, iPad mini and iPod to patent lawsuit, gets a look at Apple / HTC settlement

Ready for some more legal mumbo-jumbo? We're happy to oblige: Samsung is asking Judge Paul Grewal to amend its patent infringement allegations to include Apple's latest 4th and 5th generation iPad and iPod Touch, as well as the 7.9-inch iPad mini. Sammy says it's arguing on the side of efficiency, noting that the new hardware is up against the very same claims as the iPhone 5 it added to the case last week, asserting that their inclusion wouldn't be a burden to the court. Grewal, who was expecting this motion, is also being asked to decide if older iPod hardware is covered by Samsung's original infringement contention, which vaguely described "all Apple products including a built-in speaker and an external audio output port," as violators. The Judge also recently approved Samsung's request to sneak a peek at HTC and Apple's recent settlement agreement. The proceedings seem to keep Grewal and his gavel busy, but at least your legalese loving uncle will have something to drone on about over Thanksgiving dinner.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.
