Google Now awarded Popular Science's Innovation of the Year

Popular Science has given Google Now its "Innovation of the Year" award, putting it alongside past winners like the Large Hadron Collider, the Toyota Prius and the Mars Curiosity Rover. It's august company to be sure, and the reasoning behind the decision is that it's "the first virtual assistant that truly anticipates your needs." The service has grown quite a bit since its initial launch -- from personalized recommendations to public safety alerts and the addition of a pedometer, it seems that these are early days yet for the context- and location-aware app. Hit the Android G+ source link to read a Q&A between PopSci and part of the Google Now team to get some behind-the-scenes insight of the award-winning service.

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 05:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

What Mitt Romney Could Have Learned from EMC's Joe Tucci

We've had a couple of weeks to think about the election outcome, and both sides are positioning the results around the issues. This has become so divisive that there is a significant move by Texas to exit the United States and become a country. I've spent some time looking at this, and the real reason the Republicans lost is that the Democrats used data analytics to win a race that by the numbers, they should have actually lost. In short, while Romney was positioned as the better manager, Obama's campaign was better managed.

iOS App Turns the Dyle on Mobile TV

For more than half the nation, live broadcast television can now be in the palm of their hands. A new accessory for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad allows the devices to receive live broadcast TV feeds through a free service offered by Dyle Mobile TV in 35 markets covering 55 percent of the U.S. population. The EyeTV Mobile accessory costs $99.95 and is made by Elgato. It plugs into the dock connector -- that's the older dock connector, not the Lightning connector on the latest generation of Apple products -- on devices running iOS 5.1 or greater.

Hands-On: Nokia’s ‘Here Maps’ iOS App Is a Buggy Eyesore

Programmer builds bot to buy random stuff from Amazon, takes secret Santa to a whole new level

DNP Programmer built a bot to buy random stuff from Amazon, takes secret Santa to a whole new level

In what may be the quickest route to landing on an episode of Hoarders, programmer Darius Kazemi has built a shopping bot to buy him around $50 worth of stuff every month from Amazon completely at random. He compared it to putting something on backorder and then receiving it months later, as if it's a surprise gift you bought yourself. The only difference with this Amazon Random Shopper he built is that it buys him, well, random crap that he may or may not like. Kazemi recently received his first shipment, and it consisted of a book about Cartesian Linguistics by Noam Chomsky and an electro-acoustic album by Hungarian composer Ákos Rózmann. We'd say that's pretty random. Maybe if he increased the limit to $300, he could get a Kindle Fire HD, or a maybe a few deer heads. This could turn out to be a pretty good idea or a really bad one, and we can't wait to see what treasures the following months will bring him.
