Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Two sleeves, two phones. That's what we've got in store for you this week, with Darren dropping $55 on two protective cases and two of our intrepid staffers trying out some new handsets. On team Android, we have Edgar setting aside his Galaxy Nexus to try out the GS III, while Jon Fingas (team Phone, really) trades off between a GNex and iPhone 5. How does he like his new iPhone apart from mapgate and that minor purple flare issue? Read on to find out.

VectorMount for GoPro – Centrifugal fun

Point of view (POV) cameras are all the rage now, and it seems that new models from manufacturers are popping up all over the place.  Being able to take POV footage is great, but sometimes the footage from a static mounting position can get a bit boring. How do you make your footage stand out from the mountains of footage being posted on YouTube everyday?  VectorMount is a vehicle mounting system for the GoPro range of cameras that uses  inertial and centrifugal force to swing the camera around, giving a much more dynamic view. For example, rather than filming where the front of the car is  ”looking” for the whole time, the VectorMount allows you to dynamically “look into the corner” just like the driver’s view would be.

The modular system starts at $249 for their tri-base package, and additional mounts and accessories are available from their estore.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

How to browse full screen on the iPhone using Safari

How to browse full screen with Safari on your iPhone

When the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 went 16:9 there was a risk that, while browsing the web in landscape, the top and bottom navigation menus in Safari would not only look ridiculously long, but the screen would look far too short to be enjoyable. Luckily, Apple thought of that and included a new, full-screen mode for Safari in iOS 6. Using full-screen, every pixel of that new, widescreen display is available to show you content and nothing but content.

Here's how it works.

  1. Launch the Safari app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  • Navigate to the page you'd like to view in full screen mode.
  • Rotate your iPhone or iPod touch so it's in landscape mode if you haven't already.
  • Tap the Full Screen button in the bottom right hand corner. (it looks like two diagonal arrows.)
  • Tap the Full Screen button (now transparent) again to return to regular mode.
  • You can now browse to your heart's content in full screen mode until you choose to turn it off. How do you like that bigger screen now?

European News Outlets Nipping at Google's Hand

Later this month, German legislators will take up debate on a bill extending copyright protection to snippets of news articles that appear in search engine results. Google has warned both Germany and France -- which has proposed similar legislation -- that it is not willing to play along, and will simply black out media outlets that try to levy such fees. However, German copyright laws are different from those in the United States, and they tend to favor content creators above all.

MightyText for Android – Text from your phone with your browser

Lets face it, your Android phone’s fine for texting once in a while, but the small screen and even the best virtual keyboards aren’t the ideal for long and frequent message exchanges.  MightyText  is an app that installs on your phone, and as long as your phone is connected to the internet and you’ve got a browser available, you can send and recieve SMS text messages with your computer or tablet.  The nice thing is that sent messages show as coming from your phone number and fully sync with your phone’s SMS logs. Even if your phone’s not near you, you can easily send, receive and keep track of your texts.

Free from the Google Play Store.
